Guest Post by Jack Daniel, Voice Actor: As a practitioner of the art and business of voice acting, I am necessarily a student of the craft. Not a big surprise, I should think; I know vastly accomplished VO talents—men and women who I look up to and admire deeply—who never stop working to become ever better at their profession, and who regularly work with coaches and colleagues to stay at the top of their game. No doubt it’s partly this commitment to excellence that got them where they are, and that would raise them to the top no matter what path[...]

GUEST POST by John Kuehne, Voice Actor: Speaking with many voice actors recently, I've noticed a recurring theme.  Most still don’t understand the importance of having video as a part of their personal brand marketing. Granted, in the past, voice talent were able to get by with having their “audio only” demo as their primary marketing calling card. In today’s visual world, voiceover talent must take the opportunity to capture the additional impact of igniting the additional visual sense to convert their brand message into bookings. It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone the impact that video has for a higher results on[...]

Voice Acting Coach

Guest Post by Marc Cashman, V-O Coach: Voiceover is Show Business Finding legitimate people in any business is tough--not just show business. There are a lot of people out there who claim expertise in their field. And, only afterward, do we determine that they weren't as good as their promotion. Well, we all know that anything that sounds too good to be true, is.  But there are scammers out there--a LOT of people out there who would love to separate you from your money, promising you an instant career in very short amount of time for just a few thousand bucks! There are scammers who go[...]

When you hire a voice actor for any aspect of your business, the actor becomes the voice of your business. Whether for marketing, explainer or product videos, for websites and social media, radio and TV commercials, voicemail, they represent your brand. Hiring a voice can be affordable, or cost prohibitive... ...depending upon at least three variables including who you hire to produce a project, the script lengths, and the usage of recordings. You can hire an ad or media agency, a video production company, or a marketing company to produce everything for you. The choices and price points are endless. They will in turn, hire talent for you. However, if YOU[...]

HEADSHOTS: How important are they? I've had A LOT of headshots. Lucky for me, and you, I've lost my shots from the 80's in one of my cross-country moves. If you are building a career or a business, you need one. Our online image is highly relevant in expressing (and subjectively determining) our credibility. Yes, this is unfortunate, but proven. CNN: Avatar, shmavatar: Online profile pics really do matter  BUFFER: The Research & Science Behind Finding Your Best Profile Picture A professional headshot is key on LinkedIn and on other mediums where you need a profile image. Even on personal social media, we are (definitely) judged on how we look and a[...]

It's that time of year when the focus is on staying well, avoiding illness... Every year, my kid's schools have a Valentine's Day dance and every year, my daughter misses it resentfully due to illness. Like clockwork, both my kids have just been sick and I'd like to PROUDLY say, I've avoided it. Vocal Health Ninja! Voice Talent, Dave Courvoisier writes parents off, tongue in check, in this voice-over wellness post saying that "if you have school aged children...you're screwed". Well, yes, it's a major challenge, but I have a business to run... I need to do EVERYTHING in my power to stay healthy.  (I've written[...]

This year, I've given my entire voiceover business a total overhaul. Earlier in the year, I called it #VOUpgrade2016. I wasn't kidding. Once you start, its like peeling an onion... oh, the layers! The Studio There was a lot of experimenting, learning, equipment returns, and taking two steps back to take one step forward. Most notable is the studio. Going from a dynamic microphone (normally used for radio and TV) and moving to a shotgun condenser mic, is a game changer for me and had its growing pains. After several mic exchanges, I'm set - a Sennheiser 416. It's the current gold standard for many[...]

Moving close to L.A. is providing me with amazing opportunities that will continue be revealed with time. This Saturday, January 23rd, I'm attending the 200th episode taping of VO Buzz Weekly. This event will have Voiceover "All-Stars" attending - actors and industry professionals. I'm kinda freaking out... Not only because I have not yet driven down the I-5 into the city by myself (AND need to squeeze into Spanx), but because I'll be faced with a theatre full of people who do what I do daily and yet, have absolutely no idea who I am. Initially, I consciously decided that I would pass on attending because of the[...]

Adding Audio to Your Content - Part Two - What and Where? Creating and sharing audio content makes good business sense for me as a voice actor. In Part One of my blog "Adding Audio to your Content", I mentioned that ALL business owners and sales professionals could benefit from adding the element of audio, not just those of us who are selling our voice. What to say? Introduce your business, or yourself, with a recorded greeting. Here's an example:[audio mp3="http://natashamarchewka.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/natashas-greeting.mp3"][/audio] An elevator pitch - a compelling 30-60 second story of what you do… A call to action - something you would[...]
