Voiceover to do list

"Every aspect of your life can benefit from goal setting, action planning, prioritizing, and list making."    Well-Qualified List-maker I recently realized that while I’m indeed a good voice talent, and parent, I’m an EXCELLENT list maker (and an EXCELLENT judge, btw). Turns out, my upbringing that resulted in ongoing anxiety, caused me to be an obsessive list maker and a fine critic. As a result, I can churn out lists like nobody’s business (and provide feedback to whoever is willing to listen). That said, there are three things that need to be done BEFORE you make an effective To Do List. (I'm able to[...]

For some reason, I especially like taking stock of my voice-over business when I'm away from it. As someone who's more of a big picture thinker (acccording to some Myer's Briggs testing I did way back when and my own self-awareness), I enjoy looking at what I've done, where I'm going, and what I need to work on to stay focused on my goals - reviewing to-do lists, checking-in with myself about my truest objectives, and making sure I'm on track instead of working on those Not Important/Urgent tasks that come up in a regular business day. (I love the URGENT/NOT URGENT/IMPORTANT/NOT[...]

It’s very easy to lose sight of goals and purpose in the nitty-gritty, day-to-day operations of a freelance and entrepreneurial enterprise. But, there is nothing like working for yourself!! My three top tips... Be specific… about what you need to do to market yourself. You DO NOT need to cover ALL the ground, just the ground that is specific to your business. The paths to sharing your business with the right people are MANY. And, indeed, many people claim to have the answers. The truth is, your business (and its marketing plan) need a specific plan that can benefit from certain[...]

Let's talk about freelancing! Not for the faint of heart, a freelance career is LOADED with benefits. Voice Acting and owning a Voiceover Business is the ultimate freelance life. My favo(u)rite company on the planet right now is Freshbooks, an accounting and invoice software company that is blazing a trail of incredible customer service. They put together the infographic below about the life of a freelancer and I thought it apropos to everything I do. I've added my commentary on their points relating to the field of voiceovers. Before you Embark - not sure about their list of must-have's, but the grab bag of[...]

To work within the structure of a plan allows me the freedom to live in the moment. I’m a planner. I have been fascinated by, and perhaps obsessed with, time management forever. On that note, I have planned out my blogs for the year already! Gasp! What?!? Yes. But, knowing me, I will absolutely stray from my list. It’s why I’ve rarely picked out my clothes the night before or made a strict meal plan…I like to choose what I’ll wear, eat, or otherwise, when I arrive to that moment. Hypocritical, perhaps…but, to work within the structure of a plan allows me[...]

You have time…as much as any other person in this world, Einstein, Oprah, Bill Gates, or Beethoven - anyone else you deem having more time to learn, progress, gain money, experience, build an empire. Time is a level playing field and this is what is meant by “In good time” and “God speed”… Today is Tuesday. I had to consciously remember today because every day is blending into the next as it does in busier times in our lives. For many of us, it’s a constant barrage of to do lists, emails, and go, go, go. Remember the time when we used to[...]

I am going to touch on something so precious to me that I could write an epic book about it. It is something that we all share equally – not one person on this planet is given more than another and yet it is a resource so valuable that it truly is priceless. It is...time. I’ve always had a sense of the value of my time and understood that where we invest it demonstrates our priorities. It can be eye-opening to share one’s priorities, do the math as to where we actually spend our time, and realize what has taken over as priority, given the[...]

When I started my own voice-over business 8 years ago, someone asked me, “What will your working hours be?”  My answer was immediate - “24/7.”  Since I had a 6 month old baby, I wasn’t exactly surprised by the question.  I think they might have been surprised by the answer. As an entrepreneur, I don’t know a business where your hours are not 24/7.  And even with the commitment of a very young baby, I knew that I would need to be flexible, both with my business and my home life.  To think this was before Smart Phones, and only at the precipice[...]

Sometimes I feel like a terrible Mom. With a voice-over business at home, there are times I sit, feeling guilty, in my studio thinking I could be interacting with my kids, listening to them read, or helping them with an activity.  Instead, I make them their afternoon snack, put on a moderately educational show, and make use of the 30-60 minutes I have while they are quietly zoned out on the tube.  Or, I put them to bed and tell them I can only lie with them for 5 minutes because I have to record.  Or, I yell at them to[...]
