It’s very easy to lose sight of goals and purpose in the nitty-gritty, day-to-day operations of a freelance and entrepreneurial enterprise. But, there is nothing like working for yourself!! My three top tips... Be specific… about what you need to do to market yourself. You DO NOT need to cover ALL the ground, just the ground that is specific to your business. The paths to sharing your business with the right people are MANY. And, indeed, many people claim to have the answers. The truth is, your business (and its marketing plan) need a specific plan that can benefit from certain[...]

I've spent the month in all things real estate. While it is my favorite type of script to read, real estate scripts haven't been my main focus overall. As written in a blog almost a year ago, we put our house up for sale and still…it sits…waiting for its perfect buyer... In an attempt to use every resource I can think of to have my house sell, I had an aerial and interior video produced, creating the script, adding the voice, and hiring out a video production company that specializes in aerial videos with real estate experience. I am very happy with the results! 240[...]

One of my jobs in University was at the Television Bureau of Canada. It was a summer job, watching and categorizing commercials, developing their database. I seemed to land the job because my response in the job interview was “Who WOULDN’T want to watch commercials all summer?!” Well, I’m sure there are lots of people who wouldn’t, but I did and it seemed to have foreshadowed my career to some degree. Commercials entertain me. I have a sincere interest in Advertising and Marketing from more of a psychological perspective than creative. I’m fascinated by the elements of a GREAT spot, from the[...]

While reading through a copy of "The Phone Book" by The Phone Lady, Mary Jane Copps, we are reminded that the clear repetition of your phone number in a voice message is important to communicate effectively. Reading about the repetition of phone numbers reminded me of when NOT to provide your phone number. That's, when NOT to provide your phone number… When's the last time YOU wrote down a phone number when listening to the radio (or watching TV for that matter)? Dare I say, RARELY? If you are a retail advertiser, a business owner wanting to promote your business, DO NOT put your[...]

Adding Audio to Your Content - Part One - Who? As a voice actor, someone who uses and sells their voice for a living, showcasing my voice and having an archive of recorded blogs is an obvious choice for me. Adding audio to marketing adds to the multi-media dimension, offering readers more for engagement. Lucky for me, Linda Daley of Daley Progress has embraced my audio blogs as she is able to listen to it weekly while completing other tasks! But adding the element of an audio file isn’t limited to voice actors. Including a voice in your content, be it a[...]

I always thought one of the very best questions to get to know anyone was “what’s your story?” Even for someone you know, asking them on any given day “what’s your story?” will fill you in on what’s going on for them, what’s real for them in the moment. As a “singing server“ back in the ‘90’s, I was often amused by how much more my customers respected me when I opened my mouth to sing. Even more interesting to me was their reaction when they found out more of my backstory – who I was and how I came to[...]

I once threw a birthday party for my mom and invited all her friends to my house. She took the liberty of giving her guests “the tour” and since we happened to rent the rectory of a church at the time, a Heritage property (and the house where both my children came home from the hospital), it had the potential to be interesting. When my mom made the stop in my office / studio – she kept her friends in there for at least 10 minutes, offering a soliloquy of what I do for a living, or so I thought… Weeks later, my mom[...]

The number one rule in marketing is not to “sell” your product or service, but to fulfill others’ needs. Apparently, people do not care what you do, but what the benefits are for them, how you can help them. Time and time again, I’ve read that selling your business is not about constantly sharing how great you are, but about telling people how you are going to solve their problems. Okay. So how do we do this? As someone who voices commercials and is not really saving the world in any way, I have wondered about this for a long time… How[...]

Is there a specific marketing tool that works best for your unique business? As a “solopreneur”, I am currently obsessed with marketing. I am most intrigued by finding the right combination of advertising and marketing for any given business. With all that is now available to us in the way of marketing, the mix can be very diverse. I am currently on a mission to figure out what are must have’s in business in general. I realized nine years ago that simply a web presence for my own business was vital. I knew that a website, or even just a webpage,[...]

If you are a human on the planet earth, you can benefit from eLearning. If you are a business in the global marketplace, or a shop on the corner, there is an even greater potential here! Stay with me… From corporate presentations to pre-school education, what can be taught, can be delivered through some version of eLearning. Aside from the fact that I’ve managed to find everything from how to roll sushi to how to pronounce French words on YouTube, the potential for eLearning beyond YouTube can benefit all people and all businesses. A blog article from Edge Studio, NYC experts in[...]
