This year, I've given my entire voiceover business a total overhaul. Earlier in the year, I called it #VOUpgrade2016. I wasn't kidding. Once you start, its like peeling an onion... oh, the layers! The Studio There was a lot of experimenting, learning, equipment returns, and taking two steps back to take one step forward. Most notable is the studio. Going from a dynamic microphone (normally used for radio and TV) and moving to a shotgun condenser mic, is a game changer for me and had its growing pains. After several mic exchanges, I'm set - a Sennheiser 416. It's the current gold standard for many[...]

It's officially halfway through the year and I'm on the precipice of nice big changes for my business. Once July hits, I'll have a new studio space, new website, new monthly newsletter, after already having checked MANY other items of my list. Ten years in voiceovers, having worked steadily IN my business, but not ON my business,... it's time. #VOUPGRADE2016 My planned list for upping my game this year included the following: Voice coaching - I spent January and February learning from voiceover coach, Marc Cashman, helping to perfect my voiceover skills. Studio space upgrade - I purchased the coveted StudioBricks booth and had[...]

On Tuesday, May 31st, 2016, I had the honor of attending the 2016 Action Enterpreneurship Canadian Summit and the accompanying award ceremony in Toronto for my mentor, Mary Jane Copps, who won the 2016 BDC Mentorship Award from Futurpreneur Canada. As her mentee, I was afforded the luxury of being there in person. I needed to keep tight-lipped about it up to the very last second. I can finally share... Mary Jane has worked tirelessly for decades as a mentor to young people as a “Big Sister”, a volunteer, and a mentor to entrepreneurs of all kinds. I’m delighted she is finally receiving the recognition[...]

Sometimes you just need to hit the "refresh" button. Things are stalled or stale and you just know, it's time. Other times, things break down or they haven't been working that well for awhile. I have a list as long as my arm of things I'd like to upgrade in my business and my studio, and this year, it's time. #VOUPGRADE2016 My planned list for upping my game this year includes the following: Voice coaching Studio space upgrade Computer and recording component transition Microphone change-out Headshot redo Website revamp Progress. I love it!! Here I go………weeeeeeeeeeeee! STUDIO BRICKS SOUNDPROOF BOOTH I'm absolutely thrilled, and amazed, to[...]

For the first time in the ten years I've been in business, I recently indulged myself in two voice-over coaching sessions in one week. My decision to have Marc Cashman as my coach was a long-time decision and deliberate plan upon my arrival to California. Being coached exposes my vulnerabilities. I can't deny that being open to feedback can be excruciating, despite my ironic love for it. As I open myself to constructive criticism, I invite comments that even my most critical self has not already commented on. To be honest, it felt painful. I thought I would roll up my sleeves[...]

When anyone asks me if I am passionate about doing voice overs, I respond by saying I’m not passionate about voice overs, but I AM passionate about owning my own business… Rightly or wrongly, it was my honest answer, and yet, this was my closely guarded secret from the voiceover industry and my clients. I figured if I let the cat out of the bag, that I really didn’t have a passion for voiceovers, the coach, producer, or clients would then say, “If you aren’t passionate about voice-over, then you’ll never succeed.” Or worse, say nothing at all and move on. Well, as[...]

A stranger asked me for my expertise the other day…that is, a follower on Twitter whom I'd never personally met. I was delighted to hear he'd been reading my blog regularly and asked me to critique a sample of his narration as he is interested in working in voice-overs and considering posting samples on Voices.com. While his voice timbre was nice – consistent with what he has heard from others, ("You have a good voice!"), I needed to let him know what needed work. Helping him may help you, if you are wondering about your own vocal delivery. Working with your voice,[...]

As a result of voicing scripts for ten years, my singing performance experience, and recent Yoga training, I've realized an astute ability to coach speakers on their personal performance of a prepared speech. I recently had the great fortune to work with "The Phone Lady", Mary Jane Copps, on a speech. Initially, Mary Jane was very confident that she knew what she was doing as a seasoned communicator. She thought she was coming to me for a few constructive comments. It came as a surprise to her that her own presentation could be improved significantly with coaching. Despite her extensive communication experience,[...]

I had the privilege of leading a portion of a communications workshop with Mary Jane Copps, The Phone Lady, and coached two dozen people on how to voice a commercial. Breaking down the steps for the workshop was a great exercise in my own recognizing that there is indeed skill and talent required to record scripts that I have honed over the years.  You see, I didn't really realize all that goes into voicing material, until I had to dissect it because, to be honest, I never thought what I do is all that unique or skillful. While I am[...]
