An Unconference

I laughed. I cried. It was better than Cats!” Charlotte, North Carolina, was the destination for a voiceover conference I’ve been longing to go to for years. Indeed, I laughed and cried and truly had one of the best experiences of my life. I’ve posted about several voiceover conferences in the past including VO Mastery and That’s Voiceover and WoVOCon, each with their own benefits and highlights. Faffcon9 – touted as an “unconference” – lived up to its reputation and was less of a conference and more accurately, an experience.

(The name “faffcon” was a name created based on the idea of “faffing around”, throwing ideas back and forth amongst voiceover friends.)

The Premise

The premise of the event is that people are more “participants”, and less “an attendee” – each sharing wisdom to help educate and support their voiceover peers, each knowledgeable in their own right. From business/marketing to performance to technical prowess, each participant is an experienced voice actor with varied expertise.

I am honored to call myself one of these artists and business people. Much of the weekend is spent interacting with those who may eventually become lifelong friends, and certainly, a reliable support network. Deep sharing from the generosity of our heart and from the depth of our experience, provided a backdrop for a weekend of non-stop insights and interaction.

Only Ten

Sadly, this is the second to last event. Next year will be the 10th and final unconference. Though the spirit of faffcon has not run its course, the effort to coordinate this event, which is essentially not for profit, is monumental. Ten years will be the legacy it leaves.

So, if you are a voice actor and wondering how to participate, that is an unanswerable question. The tenth faffcon will only host participants from the last ten years. However, if you are someone who hires, or works with, voice actors, you can be sure that anyone who has participated in faffcon is one who strives to educate themselves ongoingly, who works to improve their skills in every area of the demanding freelance career of voiceovers, and who has a depth and heart as big as anyone you will ever meet.

Thank you Faffcon, for the abundance of riches. You left an indelible mark on my heart and proved, without a doubt, that you are more than the sum of your parts.

…you can be sure that anyone who has participated in faffcon is one who strives to educate themselves ongoingly, who works to improve their skills in every area of the demanding freelance career of voiceovers, and who has a depth and heart as big as anyone you will ever meet.

*Side note – The organizers of faffcon took the opportunity of approx. 150 people gathered together to also collect money for charity. Over the weekend $10,100 was raised amongst the group and donated to Hand in Hand, an organization that contributes directly to the recent hurricane related crisis areas.
