VOICE. TALENT.

Adding Audio to Your Content - Part One - Who? As a voice actor, someone who uses and sells their voice for a living, showcasing my voice and having an archive of recorded blogs is an obvious choice for me. Adding audio to marketing adds to the multi-media dimension, offering readers more for engagement. Lucky for me, Linda Daley of Daley Progress has embraced my audio blogs as she is able to listen to it weekly while completing other tasks! But adding the element of an audio file isn’t limited to voice actors. Including a voice in your content, be it a[...]

When talking to others, in casual conversation or a formal setting, being aware of where you put the emphasis on your words is important to communicate more clearly and effectively and to avoid misunderstanding. I’m a stickler for HOW people speak. And, word emphasis fascinates me because it changes the meaning of a sentence, phrase, or idea, simply with the tone, energy, modulation of our voice. Consider this sentence with the emphasis on each separate word: HOW do you know Bessie Smith? How DO you know Bessie Smith? How do YOU know Bessie Smith? How do you KNOW Bessie Smith? How[...]

You have time…as much as any other person in this world, Einstein, Oprah, Bill Gates, or Beethoven - anyone else you deem having more time to learn, progress, gain money, experience, build an empire. Time is a level playing field and this is what is meant by “In good time” and “God speed”… Today is Tuesday. I had to consciously remember today because every day is blending into the next as it does in busier times in our lives. For many of us, it’s a constant barrage of to do lists, emails, and go, go, go. Remember the time when we used to[...]

Reading a great post from fellow voice talent, Paul Strikwerda, led me to learn about World Voice Day. An annual event, it celebrates and highlights all things “Voice”, that is, vocal health and the power of the instrument that is our voice. Intrigued by the idea, I found lots of interesting information and offer you a concise version of what World Voice Day encompasses… From world-voice-day.org: The general idea underlying the World Voice Day is to demonstrate to the general public that Voice Matters. 2015 the motto is – VOICE, The Original Social Media. The strategy is to arrange a global celebration in terms of an impressive[...]

A stranger asked me for my expertise the other day…that is, a follower on Twitter whom I'd never personally met. I was delighted to hear he'd been reading my blog regularly and asked me to critique a sample of his narration as he is interested in working in voice-overs and considering posting samples on Voices.com. While his voice timbre was nice – consistent with what he has heard from others, ("You have a good voice!"), I needed to let him know what needed work. Helping him may help you, if you are wondering about your own vocal delivery. Working with your voice,[...]

It is my pleasure to introduce to you my dear friend and mentor, Mary Jane Copps, otherwise known as The Phone Lady, as my first guest blogger. Here is her view on the personalities people take on for their outgoing voicemail messages. WHICH ONE ARE YOU? by Mary Jane Copps I’ve spent much of this past week prospecting for both myself and others and I’ve noted common characteristics among voicemail messages. Does your message match any of these … and what does this mean to your prospects and customers? The Flight Attendant This message has the same intonation and pacing as the safety procedure message we hear[...]

Whether for a speech or consistently better communication skills, good posture and breathing technique top my list for improving your personal presentation.  Here are my six points from my post, "All the Way" for your reference: Posture and breathing Volume and projection Mental attitude, focus, and intention Physical gestures Script pacing, conversational and natural tones Imagery, word emphasis, and "throw away" phrases Looking at #1 today, leaving breathing for another post (figuratively!)… Turns out, good posture isn't just great for vocal delivery. As a Yoga Teacher, I've learned much about posture and what is best for keeping ourselves in best health. Yes, posture does affect your health. (Think[...]

My dear associates at CTV Northern Ontario are no stranger to the sights of what I’m seeing today in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I feel a little conflicted sharing any complaints at all, when I know the snow banks in Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, Sudbury, and North Bay must be higher than our 6 foot banks. However, today must have seen THE most snow in one day, since I moved here three years ago. As a Maritime location, Halifax has a reputation for rain, freezing rain, ice pellets…you get the picture. But Mother Nature has provided quite the blast this winter[...]

Whether it's a nervous laugh after each sentence, a quiet talker, or an overly confident communicator, I tend to "hear" a lot more than words when listening to someone. I've talked about tone of voice in "Listen to the Music" and "More than Words", among others, and while that is an aspect of today's theme, there are other qualities or habits that we demonstrate while talking. Even a broadcast professional, in their banter on the radio or in their personal life, have off-putting habits that dilute clear communication. Everyone has their "thing". What are your "go to" habits in communicating, and, are[...]
