VOICE. TALENT.
"...her rates are super reasonable..."

If you are a producer, a marketing manager, or a creative services professional, you may have problems specific to your business and the hiring of voice talent. MONEY & ACCESSIBILITY Historically, quality, established voice talent have only been accessible through agents and union affiliations. From auditioning to completing the work, talent and clients needed to congregate in the same city at a high-end recording studio, with the cost of the engineer and studio, agent and agency, added to the bill. VAST AMOUNT OF "TALENT" While the costs of hiring a voice talent aren’t what they used to be necessarily, the floodgates have opened. There[...]

Someone called me out recently on having a Canadian accent, in a social setting, and wondered if that hindered my voiceover business. Actually, she assumed it did. If I wasn't so polite, I'd have bit her head off...in the kindest, most gentlest way, of course... It is my job to make certain I'm reading all scripts with neutrality and pronouncing words appropriate for each region. I pride myself on having clients all over North America, two thirds from the US...  In casual conversation, my "out and about's" come out... but no, my Canadian-ness does not hinder my business. HOWEVER... in 11 years in business,[...]

This year, I've given my entire voiceover business a total overhaul. Earlier in the year, I called it #VOUpgrade2016. I wasn't kidding. Once you start, its like peeling an onion... oh, the layers! The Studio There was a lot of experimenting, learning, equipment returns, and taking two steps back to take one step forward. Most notable is the studio. Going from a dynamic microphone (normally used for radio and TV) and moving to a shotgun condenser mic, is a game changer for me and had its growing pains. After several mic exchanges, I'm set - a Sennheiser 416. It's the current gold standard for many[...]

VO Mastery 2016 & That's Voiceover 2016 - Two Conferences, Back to Back I had the luxury of attending two voiceover events in L.A. recently thanks to my living close to the city. Panel discussions and Q&A, well known voice actors and industry players were all the order of the day...in both cases. VO Mastery 2016 We were entertained and hosted by illustrious voice talent, Randy Thomas, who put together a day full of information, kicked off by phenomenal one-man show, "Talking to Myself" by James Arnold Taylor. The renown voice of Obi-wan, Fred Flintstone, and many, many more recognizable voices, James is absolutely the real[...]

VO: Tales and Techniques of a Voice-Over Actor - Book Review by Tracy Lindley It all started one day when I was watching VO Buzz Weekly. You know, that invaluable and infinitely intriguing show dedicated to all things voiceover.  You’d have to live under a voiceover rock not to have heard of the personable and fun-loving co-hosts, Chuck and Stacey.  In their 123rd episode, they interviewed the legendary Harlan Hogan who was, by the way, a more humble and transparent man than I would ever suspect from someone with as many accomplishments as he has collected over his 30-plus years as[...]

Ever had the chance to go back and look at work you've done in the past, only to realize what you might have done differently? There are only six lines in this commercial I voiced for Leon's Furniture, Canada, in 2012, but three of those lines, I would do over. I would finesse it and make more natural. While I received great feedback at the time, I would give it a failing grade today. Given what I now know and hear, I would change the following in the first three lines: Pitch - like a song, the melody needs to be taken[...]

As a waitress, I used to know, almost to the minute, when food should be up in the window after I placed the order. In voiceovers, we are able to read scripts to time almost to the second. This sort of internal clock seems to come automatically, (after repeated practice, of course.) Timing is everything. In conversation, in comedy, in cooking…it’s crucial. Turns out, this is my 100th blog. 99 blogs and I’m proud to say I haven’t dropped the ball. My favo(u)rite subject? Time. Last blog, I wrote about finding my inner meter. A couple of times, I’ve blogged about our investment[...]

Warning: this is personal. A recent trip I spent the long weekend in September at a retreat at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York. I experienced some of the Western world’s foremost devotional singers, Deva Premal & Miten, Krishna Das, and Jai Uttal, and others such as Nawang Khechog, C.C. White, Fanna-Fi-Allah Sufi Qawwali, and The Hanumen. And, while you may or may not have heard of them before, imagine a hippy-love-fest kinda vibe. Why I went I felt compelled to attend this four-day music and love fest both because it was called “the Yoga of Voice”, two things I am attracted to – Yoga[...]

Voice Talent

Creating a list of unique selling points is important to help you stand out as an employee, an interviewee, a company What makes me stand out from any other female, middle-age voice talent?  It’s taken me years to know why and how I was in any way different from another. Standing out in a crowd of other voice talent, voice actors, and radio announcers is no easy task. In digging deep and truly thinking about what I uniquely offer, I came up with a list of a dozen points that I can confidently state as my Unique Selling Points. I support anyone in creating a[...]
